About YardsCubed
YardsCubed is built by Jeridan Kowal. He is a web developer and designer in Nanaimo, BC.
YardsCubed is a small set of calculators for the materials that go into a yard: gravel, mulch, topsoil, sand and concrete. Each one answers the question people ask before they call a supplier: how much do I order?
What makes these calculators different
- They start from the project. Pick "driveway base" or "new lawn" and the calculator fills in a sensible depth and material, then you adjust.
- Compaction and settling are built in. Road base, fill dirt and raised bed mix shrink after they are placed. Most calculators leave that to you; ours add it and show you how much.
- Answers in the units suppliers use. Cubic yards, tons, bags, or metric, with the conversion shown.
- You can see the area. The 3D view redraws as you type, so a misplaced decimal is obvious.
How the numbers are checked
Every formula, density and compaction allowance is listed on How we calculate, with sources where a published figure exists. The calculators and guides were last reviewed in November 2026.
These are planning estimates, not engineering. Material weights vary by quarry, moisture and gradation, so if your supplier's ticket gives a different figure, trust the ticket.
